Why rent the SM58
- The live-sound standard. The SM58 is the most widely used handheld vocal mic in the world — reliable, predictable, and easy for any speaker to pick up and use.
- Clear, warm vocals. A tailored frequency response is shaped for speech and singing, so announcements and toasts come through intelligibly.
- Rejects background noise. The cardioid pattern focuses on the person speaking and cuts crowd, room, and speaker bleed.
- Built-in pop filter. The spherical mesh grille softens breath and plosive “p” and “b” sounds for cleaner speech.
- Tough and simple. No batteries, no phantom power, no settings — just plug the XLR into a mixer or powered speaker and go.
- Easy to pair. Works with a mixer and powered speaker, plus tents, tables & chairs, and generators for a full setup.

- Church services, youth groups, and fellowship events
- School events, assemblies, and award nights
- Graduation parties and celebrations
- DJ and MC setups, announcements, and hosting
- Karaoke nights and sing-along setups

- Outdoor and tented events with a PA or powered speaker
Setup planning
The SM58 itself takes almost no space and no outlet — but it only makes sound when it's connected to a system. Plan for an XLR cable running from the mic to a mixer or powered speaker, and a clear path for that cable away from guest walkways.
Decide in advance where the speaker(s) will sit relative to the person speaking. Keep the mic in front of the speakers, not pointed at them, to avoid feedback, and keep the cable run as short and direct as the layout allows.
Contact the office before booking if your event is in a large hall, a tented or outdoor layout, or a venue with limited power for the speaker — these affect how many mics, speakers, and cables you'll want on the order.
What you'll need to run it
The SM58 needs no outlet, no batteries, and no phantom power. It does require a 3-pin XLR cable into a mixer or powered speaker to produce sound, so make sure that gear — and the outlet it plugs into — is part of your plan.
Keep cables routed away from walkways, doorways, dance-floor edges, and high-traffic paths. Do not run cables through wet areas or anywhere they may be stepped on, pulled, or pinched.
If your speaker or mixer location doesn't have safe power nearby, add a generator rental before checkout — useful for parks, fields, and outdoor tented layouts.
Handling & care
Hold the SM58 by the body, not over the grille, and keep it a few inches from the mouth for the clearest speech. Cupping the grille reduces sound quality and can cause feedback.
Keep the mic and cable dry. Don't set drinks near the connection, don't drop the mic, and don't yank the cable from the connector — unplug by the XLR housing.
Every mic is cleaned and tested between rentals. If you're using it outdoors, keep it shaded and dry, and stop use if weather may expose the mic, cable, or connected gear to water.

Frequently asked questions
Is the SM58 wired or wireless?
This is the standard wired SM58, which connects by a 3-pin XLR cable to a mixer or powered speaker. If you need a wireless handheld instead, contact the office about availability.
Does it need power or batteries?
No. The SM58 is a dynamic mic, so it needs no batteries and no phantom power — just an XLR cable into a powered system.
What else do I need to use it?
An XLR cable and a mixer or powered speaker. If you don't already have a sound system, add a powered speaker and mixer from our audio & lighting equipment when booking.
Can it be used outdoors?
Yes, in a dry location. Keep the mic, cable, and connected speaker out of rain and away from water, and stop use if weather may expose the gear to moisture.
